Portugal holidays for the family

At Beds on Board we get really excited about hearing from guests who have had wonderful adventures staying on a boat in some of Europe’s most beautiful marinas.

Families looking for a unique way to stay, look to our crew to find interesting new ports for them to explore.

Portugal’s warm climate and friendly people make it a brilliant place for a family holiday, and a stay on a boat is a surefire way to see a different side to this fascinating country.

Port in historic Porto

Portugal’s most famous wine, Port is grown on the banks of the River Douro. The wine is carried downstream and sold in the city of Porto. Today this UNESCO city has a thriving marina with interesting restaurants and bars waiting to be explored.

This luxurious motorboat ‘Vintage’ was recently used by British actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales in their hit Channel 4 TV show ‘Great Canal Journeys’. It sleeps up to six people and her crew can arrange visits to nearby wineries should you want to taste the region’s most famous wine.

Take a city break in Lisbon

The historic capital of Portugal is the perfect place for a city break weekend, with many of its marina’s located near some of the city’s best tourist hot spots. The Tagus River which flows through the city, is also home to Leonardo’s sailing yacht, a popular boat which sleeps four.

The Tower of Belem and it’s nearby historic monastery are a short walk from the marina. The capital is a very affordable place to travel, with a stay on board the luxury sailing yacht ‘Jotomar III’ costing as little as £10 per person.

Away from the water the city’s trams ensure that you don’t need to struggle up any of the seven hills which surround Lisbon.

However if you can make the effort then the views looking out over the Tagus, and onwards towards the Atlantic Ocean are pretty special.

It’s also a great base from which to explore the west coast of Portugal. Waves rolling in off the Atlantic, mean that the region is a fantastic place for surfing, with your own sandy white beach just a short drive away.

Enjoy the delights of the Algarve

A magnet for British holidaymakers, the Algarve promises warm weather, sandy beaches and a safe, family friendly environment. A short 2 hour flight to the region’s main city of Faro opens up a wide range of small Portuguese fishing villages and towns, all with crystal clear blue waters which are endlessly tempting.

The marina in Vilamoura, a short taxi ride from Faro, was named International Marina of the Year by the British Marine Association in 2016 and for good reason. The fantastic bars and restaurants are just the gateway to the wide range of family friendly activities in the city. With long beaches, watersports, and waterparks all readily available, it’s easy to understand why this area is so popular with families.

A stay on ‘Ventania IV, in Vilamoura,’ offers a really affordable option for families, with accommodation for five people from £80 per night. For those looking for a little more luxury, a night on the ‘Dolce Vita’, promises a quiet retreat from £220 per night.

Further along the coast is the fishing town of Lagos with its five kilometre white sandy beach mere moments from the popular marina. A stay onboard the sailing yacht ‘Arrifana’ also includes access to the marina’s swimming pool should you want a break from the salt water.
