Limehouse is located in the Docklands, East London and is rich in amenities and well served by public transport.
Local recommendations include:
The Narrow (family and dog-friendly bistro facing the Thames) entrance on Narrow Street
The Grapes (dog-friendly no-children allowed traditional pub reputedly belonging to Sir Ian McKellen) just along from The Narrow
Craft Beer Co on Commercial Street right next to Limehouse DLR station for those whose focus is on the beverage
The Yurt Cafe (a quirky treat for coffee &. Great for breakfast or a light lunch)
Canary Wharf is walking distance or two stops on the DLR and contains an ever-evolving portfolio of shops, bars and restaurants.
Our current food favourite is Royal China right opposite the Thames Clipper stop which does wonderful dim sum at lunchtime as well as providing a great waterside Thames view.
Those who still have the energy to burn can visit the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre, which offers a host of activities, including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and power boating courses.
Looking for a thrill? Capital Karts at the southern tip of Mile End Park is suitable for young adults. There is a skate park next door and a climbing wall too.
Located in the heart of the Docklands area of London's vibrant East End.
Walk the canals for a quieter perspective on the city.
Take the Thames Path east to Canary Wharf or west through Wapping woods and the ornamental canal, past St Katherine's Dock to Tower Bridge
East London contains many hidden gems. We recommend walking along the Regents Canal to Columbia Road Flower Market (Sundays Only).
Want to look beyond the neighbourhood? The nearest DLR stations are Westferry and Limehouse (Canary Wharf is 4 minutes ride, Tower Gateway is 6) or why not keep things maritime and take the Thames Clipper from Canary Wharf (20 minute walk along the river from the boat) east to Greenwich or west to Tate Modern, Westminster or the London Eye?
The Overground from Shadwell runs north to Shoreditch High Street - perfect for exploring the independent shops, restaurants, bars and clubs of Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market.

Floating accommodation Perfection
If you are looking for a very well appointed, quality, fresh and clean accommodation in an idyllic setting, look no further and contact Anna to make a reservation. The boat is new, the fit out is extensive, the quality is great and the host is so warm and welcoming. 100% brilliant.
A fantastic few days
We'd like to say a huge thank you to Anna. We had a wonderful few days on Bert and the Whale. She was a beautiful boat with everything you could want. Everyone in the family had a lovely time and it was nice to be able to all sit down cosy next to the wood burner and spend some great family time together. A great location to stay somewhere different in London. Hopefully we'll be back to stay again in the future
Great experience !!
Highly recommended! We loved the experience of staying in Anna's boat. The boat is very clean, it is warm and the bed is very comfortable. Anna was lovely and very welcoming. I would definitely repeat it :)
Unique and fantastic experience
I have already recommended this boat to all my friends: beautiful location (magic at night), 5 stars hotel comfort, more than enough space, everything on board is easy to use. Anna was a great host, available and helpful. A fantastic birthday night.
Fantastic unique experience, will definitely be back!
Thankyou for such a great weekend break. The location was amazing, and the boat romantically fantastic. The boat was gorgeous, quirky and immaculate inside, had everything we required and more. Beds were super comfy and the wood burner was to die for. Whilst we were this time on our own for a quiet couples break, it could have suitable for us to return with the family or friends! Worth saying, the close local shop and the great restaurants 5 minutes away at Canary Wharf also complimented an amazing stay! I will definitely be recommending to all my friends and be coming back again... Thankyou Sarah & Bert
A Chillout Before Christmas
I knew we were going to have a great time even before we got to the boat. The fun message exchange with Anna leading up to our stay gave me a great sense that we were in contact with a genuine, warm & friendly person. Anna's boat was gorgeous to look at inside and out and had everything in it you could possible need - a real home from home which we (Mrs E and our 2 boys aged 10 & 13) used as a base for exploring the east side of London - chilling out as a family before the Christmas invasions start. Bert and the Whale also has a collection of new things I'd not encountered before and these became a focal point for me and the boys during our stay. Mrs E has obviously encountered these things before and did not understand our fascination with the.......... "port hole bungs". For the curious amongst you Bert & the Whale comes fully equipped with multiple "port hole bungs" aka "curtain/cushion things" that can either be used to bung up the port holes at night, or make an interesting weapon of choice if say you are a 10 year old boy taking on his 13 year old brother in mild combat.....(Anna - no port hole bungs were harmed during the making of these battles). Anna also left some nice unexpected extra touches - chocolates, Prosecco & beer in the fridge. A lovely lit stove made the boat warm & cosy for our arrival during the Limehouse monsoon season too. I cannot think of a single negative comment to say about the arrangements to book the boat, or about our stay on board. Anna, please keep on doing what you've been doing so well - we will definitely be back. PS - the boys asked if you can leave the dog behind next time......
Wonderful, beautiful Boat!
A few work colleagues and I often meet in London and stay over - but this time I decided to book us something different instead of a dull soulless hotel (again!). Staying on this boat made the entire trip worthwhile!! The boat is exceptionally well appointed and spacious throughout. The interior decor, fixtures and fittings look superb in the photographs and somehow were better again in reality. The boat was warm and welcoming - even on a cold, wet, December evening. Normally I can't wait to get home to family after these occasions but in this instance I genuinely didn't want to leave! I can't recommend this boat highly enough and Anna was a lovely host who I feel genuinely cares that her guests have a good stay. Thank you for hosting us and letting us stay on your beautiful boat - I have every intention of booking again to ensure that I can look forward to my next work trip to the big city!!
Wonderful, relaxed stay
Thank you so much for the wonderful welcome on board. It was my husbands birthday and Anna made it extra special with birthday bunting and all the little extras. The boat was warm and cosy when we arrived and the recommended pub (The Grapes) was fantastic. We only stayed for one night but will definitely will be booking again for a charter up the canals. Highly recommended!
Boat at Limehouse
Very comfortable and luxurious stay. Very central to facilities and local station. Highly recommended for getaway that has good access to London tourist attractions.
Our stay on Bert and the Whale was better than anything we could have hoped for. From Anna's kind helpful welcome, to the little touches throughout the boat, to the ingenious design that combined the feelings of a luxury scandi flat with the relaxation of time on the water. The location is excellent, and we can't wait to stay again.
Absolute perfection... a cosy hideaway on a London canal, with plenty to go out and do... but we just wanted to stay on ‘our little boat house’. Two adults, a 12 year old and a 4 year old and it was bliss. Wrapped in blankets, with hot water bottles we sat out under the night sky until very late and just switched off from the busyness If day to day life ❤️❤️
Two weekends in a row...
Our second weekend in Bert❤️❤️ This time two nights and late Sunday check out... We found The Grapes and enjoyed a beverage standing in the deck watching LONDON Life on the water, followed by hands down the best burger and Mac & Cheese at, The Narrow xx
Bert and the Whale
This is a fabulous boat! Beautiful condition, gorgeously equipped and stocked with some essentials. Had everything we needed and more. We were just here for a short trip but keen to come back and stay for longer. Definitely makes you consider whether living on a houseboat could be feasible! Due to weather we had to change plans slightly but Anna was very helpful and flexible. Highly recommended
Delightful alternative to London accommodation
Travelling to London with kids in tow for work meetings is a challenge. Staying on Bert and the Whale was such a pleasure, and really transformed the visit for the whole family. The boat was charmingly fitted out, and moored conveniently at Limehouse Marina, a short walk from the tube or train. Anna helped organise a cruise for the family on the boat, which was a highlight of our trip. Thanks so much!
Booked for a 1 night stay as part of my husbands birthday celebrations, and what a special treat this was! Bert and the Whale boat is utterly gorgeous, resembling any good 5* boutique hotel, but with the extra benefits of being away from it all, on a tranquil river life. Anna made our stay extra special with little treats on our arrival, and birthday bunting. The boat itself is beautifully designed, and although compact, it feels roomy. The kitchen has everything you need, and the lounge area comfy with a gorgeous wood burner adding that special romantic and cosy touch. The kids room is perfect with bunk and single bed, and the main bedroom has a super comfortable bed with luxurious bedding. I was surprised to see the bathroom had a bath! along with good shower and as with the rest of the decor-beautiful. This really is luxury accommodation, and I will certainly highly recommend to friends and family.
Our first time using B/O/B must say an excellent time! The boat was absolutely beautiful and I can’t wait for our next stay.
Beautiful boat in a fantastic location
Not only is the boat beautifully decorated and the location great for site seeing, it’s also so peaceful! Hard to believe you’re in central London! I had a wonderful visit & the best night’s sleep :)
