Stay on a boat in Kings Cross, United Kingdom
Live on our beautiful houseboat on its unique private mooring in the heart of London surrounded by water, trees, coots & swans, yet just a few mins walk to Kings Cross & Islington with their bustling bars, markets, restaurants, shops & theatres. At the end of the day relax on the mooring: cook a BBQ, sit out in the wheelhouse, or take the rowboat to Kings Cross for a sunset drink - you will not find a more original & relaxing stay in London.
Galatée is a new houseboat located on a quiet wooded private gated mooring, fully secure and in the heart of London. Galatée is not on the public towpath. You will have use of the garden which includes a BBQ area with table and chairs and a hammock. There is also a beautiful clinker built rowing boat which is available for use.
Galatée can accommodate 5 people with two double beds and a single sofa bed. There is also a small high level bunk if required.
Galalée is light and bright, and well equipped with mains electricity and plentiful hot water.
There are two entrances to the boat at the bow and at the stern.
The bow deck has outside seating and double doors into the front cosy cabin comprising a small living room with folding table and chairs, TV/dvd, and single sofa-bed (80 cms wide), and a large cupboard separating a cabin with double berth. This berth has a footwell in order to accommodate a full size mattress (140 cms wide by 195 cms long).
At the stern there is a new hardwood wheelhouse with a table that accommodates 6 people. There is also a single berth under the roof. The wheelhouse gives access into the main living space, with sitting area, dining table and open kitchen.
The sitting area comprises a Ligne Roset sofa which opens into a comfortable sofa-bed (160 cms wide) and this sleeping area can be screened off at night for privacy. Adjacent is also a small bathroom with bath/shower, washbasin and chemical toilet.
The bow and stern parts are linked by a corridor where there is a full size fridge and microwave, a second bathroom with basin, shower and small bath, and chemical toilet. Electric heaters are available in each room and there is a solid fuel stove in the living room that can be used for extra heat in winter.
Please note that there are 25 steps down to the mooring and a step onto the boat. The mooring is safe and secluded, it is private to just four houseboats.
At the gatehouse you will find a washing machine and tumble dryer.
On the mooring we have a private wooded garden with a BBQ area which you may use (please buy your own charcoal).
We have a beautiful clinker-built rowboat available at your own risk (you must be a competent oarsman as the canal is sometimes busy and needs to be navigated with care). The row up to Kings Cross is beautiful and you can moor up there for a drink or meal.
If you are angler, you can fish from the mooring which is a well known fishing spot. Permits and equipment can be supplied for £20/day with advance notice.
You will be surprised to find this quiet oasis in central London!
There is an abundance of railway, underground and bus connections in the area. You can walk along the towpath to King's Cross (15 mins) with all its connections to London, the rest of the UK, the airports and Paris/Brussels by Eurostar.
There are several bus stops nearby giving access to the West End, Coventry Garden, City and elsewhere.
There is a small supermarket (open late) just round the corner and it's an easy walk to a large shopping area at nearby Islington Angel with supermarkets, shops, cinemas, and numerous restaurants along Upper Street, as well as Chapel Market for fresh market produce (a traditional inexpensive East London food market, open every day except Mondays).
There are also several fringe theatres (Old Red Lion Theatre, The King's Head Theatre and Almeida Theatre), and music clubs at Islington. Angel station is a useful underground (Northern line) and bus hub.
In the other direction, you can walk along the canal in 5 minutes to the new Granary Square development with its fountains, bars, trendy restaurants, cinema and theatres, the iconic Word on the Water bookshop, and Harry Potter's 9 3/4 platform at Kings Cross. And at about a 30 minutes walk along the canal you get to Camden Market.
What's special about this boat
The boat with her well-designed cabins, the canal with its wildlife and boating activity, our private mooring and garden, our rowboat, the neighbourhoods of Kings Cross and Islington nearby, all this combines to make a stay on Galatée an experience that is hard to beat. The wheelhouse is a wonderful place to watch the sunset or indeed the sunrise.
About the marina/waterway
The Regent's Canal is steeped in history and places of interest. We are located in a wonderful part of London. In one direction 5 minutes walk along the canal is Granary Square, which used to be a canal basin in Victorian times where barges unloaded their goods for transportation onwards to the homes and businesses of London, and has now been artfully converted into the new and fibrant canalside heart of King's Cross, with its fountains, bars, galleries and restaurants. And further along the canal is Camden Market with its craft stalls and quirky clothing shops, a centre for London’s alternative culture. Not forgetting the Islington canal tunnel, right near to the boat, a narrow underground passage almost a mile long that stretches under Angel Islington, where boats can only pass in one direction at a time.

Beautiful boat with idyllic surroundings and amenities
The perfect mooring location sets this boat apart from others as you have a private area beside the boat to relax and enjoy the canal. On board, the boat has everything you could possibly need to have a comfortable and restful stay. The ability to use the rowboat is also a plus. The owners are wonderful, easy to coordinate with, left detailed information and a fridge full of breakfast for us to enjoy. Would definitely recommend and hope to go back.
Weekend stay on Galatee
We have just had a really fun weekend on Galatee. Sarah and Simon introduced us to the boat and explained everything in great detail when we arrived. We felt very much at home and were happy to just relax and enjoy our time on the boat as it is so peaceful . The location is brilliant with a shop round the corner and a pub too. It’s easy to walk to many bigger shops or restaurants or Chapel Market or Kings X. Or just stroll along the towpath, there is so much to see in the area. The boat is extremely well equipped and has everything you need. Only thing is maybe extra blankets for the beds if it’s chilly at night. A lovely stay and was perfect for my 60th birthday tea party ! Thank you Sarah and Simon.
Peace and tranquility in London
Loved it so much that I tried to book it again the same week but it was full. Book it love it, if you can never leave it.
Our first time to stay/sleep on a boat
We stayed our first few days in a very nice hotel on the Thames in London, and frankly we were not in a hurry to leave and move to the boat. However once we got the tour and quick start operating instructs from Joy we were smiling. We could sit in the wheelhouse and drink coffee in the a.m. that we bought at the nearby St. Pancras Train Station. And cook breakfast with the groceries that we got at the nearby Waitrose. It was a very convenient short 1/2 mile walk to the Kings Cross rail station and if you did not want to have your picture taken on Platform 9-3/4 you could zip off to Kew Gardens or take a fast Javelin Train to the coast for a day at the beach or to Cambridge to go punting behind the colleges. We watched countless narrow boats pass our floating hotel room, each as colorful and reflective of their owners personality as they were quiet. In all we loved our time on the boat and will hopefully get to repeat our visit again.
A peaceful haven
We had a lovely long weekend on this houseboat. It was comfortable, cosy and peaceful. We had everything we needed, it was very well equipped, and so quiet, you forget you are in the centre of London. Sarah and Simon are excellent hosts and communication was excellent. We would love to stay here again.
