Stay on a boat in Karlstad, Sweden

Fine little 70's cruiser moored in a marina on Hammaro peninsular near Karlstad, in an archipelago on non-tidal Lake Vannern (biggest lake in W Europe). Easy bus ride every few minutes into Karlstad city some 8 miles away or wander in the forest, pick berries, feast at picnic areas or relax, sunning yourself on rocks or sand in the bays nearby.

The Swedish climate means a long cold winter but usually a stunning though short summer season JUNE-AUG where it can get seriously hot but still have cool evenings, so it's perfect for people wanting to avoid the stifling, crowded Mediterranean. Spring is from May onwards and it's beautiful. It's also a treat to be on one of very few yachts on in such an unspoilt area. In May and in September, the evenings can be chilly. Sweden is not known for its nightlife - it's the perfect place for space and quiet, solitude, romantic nights with your loved one, and natural beauty. Lake fishing is permit free and very good. The water is wonderful and clean for swimming and being fresh water - no salt to wash off!

Main Cabin: One bunk either side in main saloon. Drop in boarding makes the bed full width (ie one could have 3 persons on it, but at a very slightly different height to the side bunks: I would hesitate to call it a 'double' bed, but it's good for partners or children to be near one another)

Fore Peak: Small cabin with a double bunk that is most suitable for children or youths, thought they were billed as adult double in the original literature. The boat has a small draught so one can moor 'on and off' in sandy bays, near land, or use one of the many keys and jetties around the lake if she is chartered to sail (by agreement). Her home marina mooring is bow-to

Basic small boat: Galley (cooker) runs on methanol spirit - double burner. There is no hot water in the taps. There is a small sink for washing up etc. with one lakewater foot pump and one boat water tank footpump. There is a toilet aboard with a holding tank for emergencies, though it is most recommended to use the toilets on land (80m from the boat in home marina) where possible and pee over the side. (One may not flush the toilet directly into the lake according to local regulations). Bring sleeping bags, or we can supply bedding by agreement for a reasonable charge.

There are very good supermarkets, a chemist's shop etc. a few hundred metres away.

There is a very good bus connection from shops to Karlstad city (8km away) by the shops.

At the marina are new, basic and very clean (free of charge) showers and toilet facilities.

There is no washing machine facility for guests at the marina, though there is one at the campsite just down the road (2-3km) by bus.

The Area

Stunning natural archipelago with good sailing either inshore behind an island barrier or 'out on the big lake' with hundreds of islands, some with full visitor services, some with nothing, such as nature reserves, just as nature intended. Anchoring is free. Berthing in other marinas usually about £10-15 if they charge at all. Fishing is permit free (with good edible fish). If the weather is inclement it usually passes quickly and the nearby city of Karlstad (small, clean and safe city with local market, churches etc) caters for most entertainment and shopping.

What's special about this boat

The fine, wild nature of the north with deer and elk running in the shore forests, old castles on islands in and around the lake, summer festivals in old cities. Safe freshwater swimming with no tides or currents. Sandy beaches for family days out and rocky islands and forest to explore. Sweden is known for its low population and respect for freedom and nature.

About the marina/waterway

Small, clean private marina with small summer cafe, nightwatchmen and basic but very clean facilities, electricity, fuel station and fresh (drinking) water hoses in easy reach. The excellent local rescue boats (sjoraddningen) are based here. Generally peaceful and quiet. There is excellent archipelago sailing just outside the marina and the whole lake is fine for visiting islands and swimming in summer.
