Stay on a boat in Skipton, United Kingdom
Stay on the Blue Otter Skipton, a bespoke narrow boat in the heart of the historic market town known as the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales.
Built in 2017, Blue Otter is a homely, 50-foot canal boat ideal for couples seeking a romantic escape or solo travellers on short visits to Skipton.
Main entrance is from the Stern into the lounge and living area, leading to the kitchen.
A sliding wooden door partitions the bathroom, leading to the bedroom at the bow.
The boat can also be entered and exited at the bow via the bedroom.
The lounge and dining area to the rear of the boat comprise comfortable seating and convenient dining facilities. By day, sunlight beams through the ceiling hatches and side windows while by night you’ll experience all the comforts of home with soft furnishings and central heating.
The handcrafted kitchen features granite work tops, a gas oven and hob, a fridge with freezer compartment, a Belfast sink and draining boards plus cupboards and drawers housing all the essential kitchen equipment.
Stepping through the sliding doors you’ll enter a bespoke bathroom with a glass-enclosed rain-shower opposite a newly fitted toilet and sink.
Finally, you’ll find privacy and a good night’s sleep in the warm and cushioned bedroom adjoining the bathroom and the bow of the boat.
The boat is moored on the tow path in central Skipton. Local restaurants and bars are within a short walking distance. If using Skipton as your base to explore the area, the train and bus stations are in the centre of town, giving access to popular attractions and hiking routes in the Yorkshire Dales.
For anyone travelling by car, private parking is available a short distance from the boat on the outskirts of town.
Skipton Castle is one of Britains best preserved castles, surrounded by woodland. A vibrant market occupies both sides of the high street every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
The friendly town is known as a gateway to the dales and many hikers use Skipton as a base to explore the countryside.
What's special about this boat
There’s a novelty factor to living on board a narrow boat that we believe will add an element of adventure to your stay in Skipton. Canal boats are a living unit within their own right, but don’t worry, we’ll be there to run through the workings.
Essentially, power isn't on tap, unlike we're used to in our homes. Power is supplied by on board batteries, which means appliances that we take for granted - such a hair dryers - can run the power supply down very quickly. If the power runs down the engine will need to be started to charge up the batteries and run for a couple of hours each day.
The fresh water tank will be filled before each visit while the wastewater tank is tucked neatly away and out of sight.
Should you be in need of assistance we’ll be on call and happy to help out – just like any hotel.
All you need to do is relax and enjoy the novelty of life on the canal.
Springs Branch, Leeds & Liverpool Canal
About the marina/waterway
The Springs Branch is in the very heart of Skipton. It runs from the main canal around the back of the castle to a former stone loading wharf. The branch opened in 1797 and was built for Lord Thanet, who lived in Skipton Castle and owned the limestone quarries served by the branch. Stone was brought from the quarries by a tramroad to be loaded into boats for the journey down to Leeds.
