Stay on a boat in Richmond, United Kingdom

The Hon Lady is moored between an island nature reserve and the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, a unique position on the tidal Thames. With central London on your doorstep, and well connected by rail, bus and tube, this peaceful backwater is a special place perched between wildlife and metropolis, the best of both worlds. Surrounded by cozy pubs, riverside walks and great restaurants, the clever layout with separate living areas is comfortable and creative. You might choose to stay in, light the stove, and enjoy the spectacular sunsets and sunrises. A nearby deli and convenient shops (both boutique and mainstream) ensure you won’t want for anything to make your stay complete.

This authentic narrowboat home has entry doors at either end. The 50ft boat is cleverly divided into distinct living areas. From back to front (the direction she's moored in, facing the bend in the river, away from the iconic Kew Bridge) the first room is the bedroom, with lots of clever storage under and around the double bed and dressing table, William Morris wall paper that celebrates the natural beauty surrounding the boat, and white wooden floorboards.

The next room is a small boaters bathroom with a stand or sit shower and an immaculately clean Elsan toilet that will be emptied before your arrival (there's a flushing toilet on the marina that guests have access to too). With mains electricity there is a constant supply of hot water to the boat.

A beautiful, surprisingly spacious kitchen with gas oven and fridge-freezer is followed by the final room, an open plan living room with a newly purchased sofa bed for additional guests. Help yourselves to the corner cocktail bar with recipes and honesty box, and fuel to light the stove; get cosy, and enjoy the spectacular sunsets and an opportunity to spot wildlife that lives on the tidal island nature reserve opposite.

A constant supply of hot water; stove; all appliance and utensils; hair dryer; iron; fresh bed linen, towels and laundered blankets; beautiful views and a comfortable home.

There are a wealth of cozy fireside pubs that you can walk to on the river towpath. A paddle boarding business operates from Kew Bridge next door if you feel adventurous and want to get even closer to the water, along with a gym, spa and dance studio. The Royal Botanic Gardens are just next door, Richmond golf course is a ten minute riverside walk away. You can even stroll all the way to Petersham Nurseries or Richmond park along the Thames without crossing a road! There is a Michelin star restaurant, The Glasshouse, in Kew Village, along with many delicious, affordable restaurants and pub restaurants. A deli on the other side of the bridge, and a couple of convenience shops, are well located for supplies.

The Area

The boat is moored next to Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where I work and can share lots of seasonal recommendations. Well connected bye tube, bus and train to central London, you can even get a river ferry to Hampton Court or Westminster in warmer months from a mooring just beside ours. Theatres and music venues in nearby Chiswick and Richmond are a five-minute bus journey away, you really can enjoy the best of both worlds from this peaceful backwater, on the doorstep of the capital city.

What's special about this boat

This unique mooring is situated in between an island nature reserve and the boundaries of Kew Gardens, giving fantastic views of Kew Bridge in sunrise and sunset, and special sightings of rare river birds and, if you're very lucky, a family of Thames seals.
