Stay on a boat in Maynooth, Ireland

Anam Cara" is a very cosy 40 ft traditional barge, that has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. Barges are flat bottomed boats that were used from 1780 to transport cargo and people to and from Dublin. Originally, barges were pulled using horse power.

Barges are now lived on and are homes of choice for a large number of people. The barge community is very active and friendly; don't be afraid to say "Hi" and stop for a chat if you pass anyone along your voyage!

Anam Cara is the perfect barge to rent. She is tastefully decorated in a way that will make you feel at home instantly. A barge holiday is a great way to relax.

As you can see, Anam Cara is mostly enclosed. The enclosed sections are the living quarters. At the bow (front) of the Anam Cara there is a lovely area to sit out on while the barge is navigating the canal. Call dibs on this spot to read a book or spot the local wildlife.

Anam Cara is a very cosy barge. She has a beautiful wooden interior which gives a great sense of warmth to the space. A clever layout leaves relatively spacious interior.

There is counter top space to prepare food on which can then be cooked on the inbuilt gas oven. The gas oven includes grill and hobs. Basic cooking equipment is provided and there is a bright airy shower room which is located beside the pump-out toilet.

There is a" dreamy" comfortable double bed which opens to give magnificent views of the night sky. The living area turns into a second double bed.

Anam Cara is heated by a beautiful wood burning stove. A small amount of fuel will be provided to suffice for the first few nights of your barge rental.

Candle light is the light of choice on the barge. Electric lights are available but limited battery capacity restrict their long term use. Candle light creates a relaxed and romantic setting! A stock of candles are also provided on board.

Bed linen, towels, crockery, pots, pans and essential supplies are on board and included in the rental. Starter pack tea and coffee etc on board.

About the marina/waterway

THE ROYAL CANAL - Legend has it that the Royal Canal was born when a disaffected director of the Grand Canal Company stormed out of a board meeting shouting angrily: "Damn you all, I'll build my own canal!" This may be true but there's no definite proof. Surveys of various routes from Dublin to the north Shannon began as early as 1755 but it was 1789 before work started and by 1796 the canal had only reached Kilcock, Co. Kildare.
